Why should I give blood?
The most important reason for becoming a regular blood donor is to meet the blood needs of our community.
There is no substitute for human blood; donors are the only source. Every two seconds, someone needs blood,
and an adequate blood supply is crucial to their survival. Remember, just one pint of your blood can save as
many as four lives. The demand for blood continues to increase, yet only 5% of the population donates.
Donating Blood
Donating blood may be one of the most important things will ever do. It is a safe and easy process which
takes approximately 45 minutes. Generally, anyone age 16 or older (16 year old donors require parental consent), weighing at least 110 pounds and in good health, can donate blood. There is an eight-week (56 day) waiting period between donations.44
What do I have to do?
1. As a blood donor you will be asked to complete a registration form and to read the educational pamphlet, “Important Information for Blood Donors.”
2. You will be registered into the computer system and given a “mini physical” by a technician. We will check and record your blood pressure, pulse and temperature.
3. You will be asked to review the information printed on the Donor Record Form, and complete a brief medical history.
4. Your iron level will be tested.
5. A skilled, specially trained technician, using a sterilized needle, will draw approximately one pint of blood.
6. After the blood has been drawn, you will be asked to relax for a few minutes and given some refreshments. You may then continue your normal activities.
